Country kitchen with pantry, scullery and boot room

The team were tasked with creating a large country kitchen, with adjoining scullery, pantry and boot room area in this traditional farmhouse. The space was full of character including traditional beams and period features that the owners wanted to work around as much as possible. They were looking for a sympathetic renovation that didn’t compromise the modern kitchen they hoped for, including state of the art appliances and practical, innovative design. The kitchen needed to work for a busy family, including a practical dining area in the kitchen and a scullery with washing facilities for the family dog.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Our in-house builder carried out extensive work on the property, knocking down the internal walls separating the existing kitchen and utility room, and repositioning them to create 3 rooms suitably sized for the kitchen, pantry and scullery. The existing timber floor was removed and a locally sourced Yorkshire stone flag floor laid. The main space was designed to feature a large L-shaped kitchen, a wall of modern stainless-steel appliances, and an 8-seater breakfast table, all centred around a generously sized island with prep sink. The etched glass door leading to the pantry cleverly showcases a combination of storage styles, including open oak shelving, hand carved apple crates and food storage cabinets with fly screens. The quartzite cold shelving is for additional cold food storage, with fully tiled walls and cabinet backs to help keep the temperature down, taking pressure off the fridge. The 3-door house hideaway cabinet, was designed with the client’s passion for baking in mind, perfectly housing ingredients, crockery and table-top appliances. It also includes a solid oak bread box to catch the inevitable crumbs. The worksurface is set slightly lower to aid mixing in large bowls and is easier for children to use.

FURTHER DETAILS

The kitchen includes Sub-Zero fridge, freezer, and wine cooler, all ingeniously inset into the wall, reducing their depth into the room. The tall cabinet houses a steam oven, warming drawer, and coffee machine all from Miele. The black AGA, a familiar feature in many farmhouse kitchens blends well with the modern appliances and traditional character of the room to add depth and warmth. Our in-house interior designer worked with the clients to choose colours and details that would link the rooms together. The scullery cabinetry, kitchen island and boot room are finished in ‘Stiffkey Blue’, with the kitchen cabinetry in ‘Down Pipe’, from Farrow & Ball. The cabinetry features polished brass handles for a modern country look. We designed and made the oak dining table, with a combination of seating from chairs and benches, to make the best use of space. The table has integrated drawers, perfect for keeping place mats and coasters tidy. Other oak details include serving trays, internal doors, cabinetry interiors and bench seating in the boot room, complementing the traditional beams and window surrounds. The 50/50 noticeboard and chalkboard is a handy, small detail to help streamline family life. The scullery includes essential Miele laundry appliances, ironing board storage, peg rail for hanging and cabinetry to hide the boiler and pipework. An innovative low-set sink with extendable tap, is ideal for filling buckets and washing the dog, so all the family are looked after!
