Mid-century, Scandinavian style kitchen

The owners of this kitchen and pantry came to us with a very specific brief and the perfect example of true bespoke design. They wanted to create a modern kitchen, with the look and feel of freestanding furniture, in a mid-century style, inspired by Scandinavian kitchens they had seen and loved. They especially liked the idea of dark wood, handle-less cabinetry and some open storage where they could display their collection of crockery. But they didn’t want to forsake modern appliances and convenience.

DESIGN SOLUTION

As our furniture is entirely bespoke, we were able to design and make exactly the look they wanted. We worked collaboratively, using their inspiration to create a cabinetry design that looked like freestanding furniture, but was fitted for convenience and easy cleaning. A door style was developed with a bespoke cut our scoop for the handles. We agreed on using polished American black walnut to create the rich dark wood look they wanted. The kitchen was designed with a peninsula, including breakfast bar seating for the whole family and dark Dekton Kelya worktops. The herringbone, fumed oak floor by Ted Todd Fine Wood Floors works wonderfully with the dark wood kitchen furniture. This is offset by the cool tones used elsewhere including the kitchen area tiled in a grey, honeycomb tile and the stainless-steel appliances, for example the Rangemaster UK oven.

FURTHER DETAILS

The kitchen walls and bespoke, canopy extractor cabinetry were tiled in the same metro tiles to create blending. We designed a recess for the large American Fisher Paykel fridge freezer, to stop it seeming too dominant in the room. Other appliances include a boiling water tap from Quooker UK and integrated dishwasher from Miele. The pendant lighting is from Original BTC and vintage look bar stool from Rockett St George. The kitchen features hand carved details on the pull-out chopping boards. The open shelving allows crockery and glassware to be on display, enhancing the Scandinavian look and feel. The co-ordinating pantry was designed to take some of the storage pressure off the kitchen. The pantry also features multi-functional, open shelving and includes storage for wine, crockery and additional appliances.
