Craftsmanship

Our experienced team of cabinetmakers and furniture finishers pride themselves on using traditional techniques to produce beautiful, handmade furniture for any room in the house. One cabinetmaker looks after a project from start to finish to ensure the best possible result. Everything is designed and hand made in the Skipton workshop, using dovetail, mortise and tenon joints; inlaid hinges; fine closure lines and seamless frames.

We welcome visits to our workshop to meet your cabinetmaker and watch your piece come to life from the raw materials to beautiful finished furniture.

CONSIDERING OUR ENVIRONMENT

We care for the environment and source all our timber from responsibly managed forests with a ‘chain of custody’, so we can trace it back to its source. We have an environmentally friendly wood burner in the workshop where we burn 90% of our waste. A local farmer collects our wood chippings for use on his farm, minimising what we send to landfill.

Our signature detail – the secret drawer

Finely crafted and cleverly concealed in all our pieces of fitted furniture, the secret drawer perfectly replicates the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into all our furniture. Using spring release, push catch or a secret recess and where they are placed is entirely the choice and ingenuity of our cabinetmakers.

Every year we have a ‘Secret Drawer of the Year’ competition where our cabinetmakers enter their best creations – using a spring release, push catch or secret recesses – the secret drawers are the choice and ingenuity of our cabinetmakers. Secret drawers within furniture are nothing new and date back many years where cabinetmakers were often asked to produce imaginative ways of hiding everything from the family jewels to the local priest.

The story of including a secret drawer within our furniture goes back to the beginning of Richard Mason’s career in furniture design and making. Inspired by an article in ‘Fine Woodworking’ magazine, Richard decided to include one in a dresser he was creating for a client and led to our name. We never tell clients the location of their secret drawer, as most people enjoy the challenge of finding it for themselves! To date, three years and counting is the longest undiscovered secret drawer….
